What to Wear to Your Family Session

I’m so excited to work with you and your family for our upcoming photo shoot! If you’re here, undoubtedly, you’d like to know what to wear to your family session. This is a common question, so I thought I would write a blog post take make your planning easier. Whether this is a one-time-only experience or for your yearly Christmas card, my hope is to help you choose outfits that match your style as well as turn out timeless images.

When you look back on your photos five or ten years from now, I hope you’ll love them just as much as the day you received your gallery. That being said, I hope you will take these as mere suggestions and know that your photoshoot will be as unique as you! If you feel like breaking all the “rules”, please be my guest!

What to Wear

Depending on the length of your session, you will be able to choose between 1-3 outfits. With each set of outfits, start with ONE outfit (probably mom’s) and build from there. Here are some things to take into account:

To Match or Not to Match

When it comes to dressing for a photo session, one of the first decisions to make is whether you and your loved ones should match your outfits or opt for coordinated colors. While matching outfits can look cute and cohesive, they may also risk overpowering the image with a single color or pattern. Instead, consider choosing complementary colors that work well together. This will help create a balanced and visually appealing composition in your photos.

Tips for Mom and Dad

Mama, consider wearing a flattering dress or jumper. These options not only make you look great but also feel comfortable during the session. As for dads, chinos paired with a crisp button-up shirt are classic choices that never go out of style. These outfits convey a polished and timeless look, perfect for family portraits.

What’s the Weather Like?

Don’t forget to consider the weather when selecting your outfits. You want to feel comfortable during the photo session, and being appropriately dressed for the conditions is essential. If it’s a colder season, think about bringing layers that you can easily put on or remove.

For warmer weather, choose breathable fabrics, and remember that comfort plays a significant role in how natural and relaxed you’ll appear in your photos.

Stay Comfy

Comfort is key during your family photo session! Plan for moving around, sitting, running, and maybe even lying down…we’ll see what happens! Wear clothing that allows you to move freely and comfortably.

Outfits that not only look good but also provide flexibility and ease of movement result in more natural and candid photos.

Shoes

The choice of footwear is often overlooked but can be crucial depending on the location of your photo session. Think about where your photos will be taken. If it’s a beach, wear sandals or barefoot for a relaxed, beachy vibe. For more rugged terrains, like a forest or park, choose comfortable, closed-toe shoes that will help you navigate uneven surfaces.

Colors and Patterns

Finally, when it comes to colors and patterns, simplicity is often the best approach. Avoid outfits with overly distracting colors or flamboyant patterns that can take the focus away from the main subject—you! Opt for timeless and understated choices that won’t compete with your natural beauty and expressions in the photos.

Remember, at the end of the day, this photo session is about you and documenting your family in this season of your life. Take the advice you like, and leave the rest on the table. In the end, you’ll know what to wear to your family session, as you know each family member best. I can’t wait to meet you all soon!
